X-32 [ JSF ]
The X-32 is
part of the Joint Strike Fighter Program (JSF). This
project is being developed by a group of countries which
include USA and UK.
The X-32 is
being developed by Boeing. Boeing has been working on a
tri-service fighter since 1992, this was because they
were convinced that by doing so they could achieve low
cost.
The most the
most important feature of the Boeing design is that it
has a single common engine with no additional devices for
powered-lift. The thrust of these engines with a fan
which limits landing weight of the marine version. It
limits its empty weight to about 10 tonnes.
Boeing has
designed a thick a thick section delta wing with no
separate horizontal tail. This is to keep the empty
weight down while providing enough fuel for long range
requirements for the navy.
To eliminate
wing fold the designers have made the fighters short this
is also helpful in reducing the spot factor. The
designers cleverly devised a chin engine inlet to
restrict the internal length.
In the USMC/Royal
Navy version, the engine exhaust has been ducted forward,
for landing landing and take-off to a pair of retractable
nozzles located at the centre of gravity of the aircraft.
In other versions, the ducts and nozzles have been
removed to achieve space for a larger internal weapons
bay.
