Ka-27 / Ka-28 Helix
The Ka-27/28 are naval helicopters having almost the same appearence, but are
totally different in their operations. These helicopters have the same NATO
reporting name of Helix. These helicopters were designed and manufactured by the Kamov
Design
Bureau, Russia. The Ka-27 and Ka-28 are naval anti-submarine helicopters. They are capable of
detecting and destroying submarines at a depth of 500m below sea level. The Ka-27/28 has day
and night capability and can operate during rough weather conditions.
Design
Like most of the Kamov helicopters the Ka-27 and Ka-28 have a coaxial rotor configuration. This
has proved efficient than the normal main rotor - tail rotor confuguration. This helicopter
has foldable rotor blades. This allows it to be effeciently stored in the hangar of an
aircraft carrier. The body of the Ka-27/28 is also designed to float on water as a safety precaution.
Onboard Systems
The Ka-27/28 carries a vast array of eectronic detection equipment onboard. This includes a MAD
(Magnetic Anomaly Detector), VGS-3 dipping sonar and an IFF system for export versions. The MAD
is a system which detects magnetic variations on the earths magnetic field. This allows the helicopter crew to detect submarines or other submerged objects which are made of metals.
